A Veryfine weekend

My mission began on Friday night (10-10-03) @ 9pm, I was invited to spin at an outlaw somewhere in Brooklyn. It was me and my wax. Together we were out bonding to achieve the night's vision, the Veryfine mission. The map point for the party was given to me before it was posted on the party's voicemail: Greenpoint Ave and Review Ave. I took the train to Brooklyn and realized that I was heading in the wrong direction. Swiped my metro card and went back to Queens. I knew I had a long walk to the spot, but my mission didn't end. I walked, stepped on dog's poo on the way, passed by a cemetery, factories and made phone calls while I was walking, talking to my people about where the spot was. I made it after a long walk; my shoulders were hurting out of carrying all that wax with me.
I saw the crew and we all helped to set up the equipment and sound. One guy was on the voicemail giving directions, the other drinking a beer and me trying to figure out why this generator is not working. The time came when everything is hooked up and we were ready to drop the first record by DJ VERYFINE. The party began!! The wind was blowing, people were dancing and dust from the ground was rising up and my wax was getting dusty. People were feeling it and so was I, pictures were snapped and people were having fun. I even saw a guy from the navy wearing his uniform dancing to one of my tracks called " Drill Sergeant" from Nukleuz Records. After a good hour my set was done.
But the Veryfine mission wasn't complete until DJ Creole got on the decks. He showed the crowd what house music is made of. It wasn't too late before the good ol' Boys in blue aka cops or (pigs) arrived at the spot. They told everyone to get the hell out of this private property and go home. Home?? That's right, so the Veryfine mission had complete and accomplished.
The next day, another free day party in Astoria Park, Queens. Our very own PS11 were scheduled to play at that event. Got there early when only the DJs were there and all they talked about was who spins what and who got what you don't have, type of conversation. The DJ was playing some slamming hard techno. The crowd was coming, more DJ's were coming with their record cases, almost felt like a guy that worked on Wall Street and walked around with his brief case. Each record case was different, some had stickers and dents and other were spic and span. Don't you ever dare yourself touching another DJ's case; they don't want you to know what they are hiding inside those cases. They might have records in them, but guess what? Not all the time. I saw 3 DJs opening their cases. One DJ opened his case, pulled out a bottle of Jack Daniels with some cups and did his thing. Another DJ pulled out a bottle of Georgi and downed it before he got on the decks.
The music was pumping; hard techno was being served to the masses. Every person you saw had a red cup, forget about smoking cigarette, the new thing now is to carry a red cup, drink, listen to music and don't dance. After a while the techno music was beginning to sound like plastic knives and forks, so DJ VERYFINE had to step into the ring. It was 7pm, park permits only allow you to rent any NYS Parks from 10am to 7pm. I made my move. I walked to the DJ turned promoter, Johnny "pigvomit" Crae his name is. Asked him to spin, he told me to talk to the DJ that brought the equipment there. I spoke to the DJ, 15 minutes before 7pm because they decided to play till they get shut down and he gave me the ok to bring out the HARD PROGRESSIVE TRANCE. Saving the best for last I thought, heart is pounding, bass is blazing and the speakers are dancing. Then, lo and behold the pigvomit came up to me and said, "Take that shit off, I don't like that Trance music, I've been to parties and I never liked that shit". I asked him if I could just make this last mix and he said, "No, take that shit off". I said to him "Damn, that's a little foul, talking like that about dance music and that's not a good way to talk to Dj Veryfine". At the end, I respected him and just stopped the music. The crowd was yelling, "Boo, boo".
So, my mission there was done and I learned an important lesson on not to get too excited and play at parties where the true value of music is insignificant.
That's it for now, more reviews coming soon. Until then...
