Donger and Recondo

Donger and Recondo
Richie C:
Richie C is a true product of his native NYC musical experience. Well
versed in hip-hop, deep disco, house, soulful techno, and punk funk, he
incorporates all these elements to create his distinct DJ sound. "I just
play anything I like instead of sticking to one genre. DJ?s like Larry
Levan and Afrika Bambata would play The Clash and The NYC Peech Boys in the
same night, and all that mattered was that the music was amazing. I
incorporate that mentality in my deejaying." Collecting records since 1993,
his sets are composed of vinyl recorded anytime from 1973 to 2003.
Richie C grew up skateboarding, and was first fueled by the rebel sounds of
punk and early hip-hop. Venturing into downtown NYC he met diverse new
people, and began attending parties such as the early Giant Step, and the
now legendary NASA. "I went to Giant Step on Thursday nights and saw jazz
played live over Gangstarr records, listened to kids freestyle rap, and
danced to disco and club classics. Then NASA would come Friday night and it
was acid house, Detroit techno, drum & bass, and ambient all in one night."
His musical education continued with a record store job in the mid 90`s. "I
would spend every day at work trying to listen to as much new music as
possible, and turn the "big dj`s" on to artists like Theo Parrish, 4 Hero,
and Basic Channel all at the same time. On my lunch break I would hit up
the vintage shops and learn about old jazz, soul, funk, and disco. I bumped
into an NYC DJ legend on one of these trips and he started pulling out
vintage vinyl for me, that`s how I knew I was leaving an impression on these
people I was servicing at the shop."
Richie C learned the value of reading crowds the hard way, at hip-hop
parties. "I didn?t have as much hip-hop as my partner Pete, so when I ran
out, I had to make an angry crowd happy, and quick. That`s when I started
whipping out classics and really learned the value of reading a crowd while
bringing your own personality to the mix. Once they trust you, you can take
them anywhere musically. I`ve had thugs dance to Blondie."
Richie C makes up half of the Bande A Part DJ`s with his childhood friend
Peter. Bande A Part recently hosted a weekly party called Love On The Run.
Completely unscripted and unformulated, you could hear just about anything
on any particular night, like A Certain Ratio played next to James Brown.
"Our crowd shows up with open ears, they know to expect the unexpected, and
that`s why they come back. It`s a rare thing to hear DJ`s take real risks
like that nowadays. Too many of the current DJs stick to one sound and it`s
time for a change. We learned all the rules and now we want to break them."
RECONDO:
Recondo hates the cold. He loves hauling a rucksack through the bush and
sweating through his cammies. When he's in the jungle, he owns it. Anybody
else is trespassing.
"A jungle is like some single, gigantic, hostile organism. It can sense when
you fear or hate it--and it is wholly without mercy. When I step into a
jungle, it sings to me like a mother soothing a napalm-ridden child."
