There is a deep sense of the undiscovered and unknown in the music of Mukund Khaitan, aka KARMA. Not surprisingly, he derives his monicker from the quintessential Hindu philosophy of Òtatva tame asiÓ, Loosely translated as a DJ, composer and producer within this core philosophy. Analogous to this way of life, by which a being can only be known through his actions (in this case, by what music he plays, produces and composes), Karma chooses this state of mind to be his focal point within the realms of his musical world Eternally striving as an artiste to provide at every possible instance a musical experience that is out of the ordinary,
He has lived in India (in Kolkata, New Delhi, Musorrie, Bombay and Goa), U.K., United States, El Salvador, Italy and Malaysia. He realized his love for music at a very early age and was subsequently involved in Indian classical training for vocals and the 'Harmonium' (a keyboard that is used as an accompaniment for vocalized Indian classical music). Following a period of disenchantment with the de rigueur that is intrinsic with Indian classical music training, Karma shifted to the piano for a short while. This eventually culminated with his training for two years with electronic keyboards. Naturally, KarmaÕs musical influences span all these genres he has associated with during his formative years Ð Indian classical, Indian Tribal Rhythms, Classical and Modern Rock, Western Classical, Pop, Latin, African Tribal Rhythms and Salsa. Over the years, he has developed a sound passion for non-commercial trance and more recently for minimalist psychedelic trance.
In the fall of 2000, his career as a DJ began in Florence, Italy, where in association with his close friend DJ Vicuna, Karma acquired his first mixing equipment. From the very start, he defined his musical style in the genre of trance, specifically non-commercial melodic trance. His career started in bars and clubs in Florence and since then he has not looked back. In the summer of 2001, he attended the School of Sound Recording and the Technics DJ Academy in Manchester, England. He completed his Roland certification for studio processes in the fields of production, composition and communication. He also completed his Level 3 certification at the Technics DJ Academy concurrently. As a part of the program, he co-composed and produced his first song with DJ Vicuna under the alias Trinity.
He lived in Philadelphia until May 2003, where he played and produced events for the last four years under the event management group Hieroglyphic. During his DJ sessions, Karma mostly plays minimalist psychedelic trance within the range of 140-145 bpm. However, given his love for progressive melodic trance on occasional nights he also plays under that influence in the range of 136-140 bpm, but prefers to restrict these sessions to club nights. He loves to spin his psy-trance at open-air events, which are more conducive to the freedom within the music. His spinning style is mainly influenced through his personal influences in Goa; however his music draws influence from Goa, Manali, Israel, Koh Phangan, Bali, and the Scandinavian and Nordic regions, Africa, Latin and South America. Karma experiences each event in-sync with his music and his dance floor, aiming to deliver an unimaginable spiritual experience for the mind, soul and the body within the realms of ballistic forms of energy created through the music. He believes that music is the only universal language present, his only true source of communication and, symbiotically, he and his music evolve together.
In the last four years as a DJ, Karma has gained invaluable experience through is various musical experiences around the globe. He does not prefer any one to the other, as they were all a significant part of his evolution to this point though there were some nights more memorable than others. He has played in Florence, Philadelphia, New York, El Salvador, Guatemala and India.
